The Member of parliament for Sagnarigu Constituency who doubles as a Ranking member of the Communications Committee of Parliament, A. B. A Fuseini , does not think the deadline date set for the SIM card re-registration exercise will hold.

According to him, the Communication and Digitalization Ministry will extend the deadline date for the re-registration given that Only fewer number of Ghanaians have so far registered as compared to the larger populace who are still struggling to register for their cards.

‘I am with the Minister in the communication committee since 2013, she has the experience, so I know very well that she will extend the deadline date for the SIM re-registration’ he said.

Speaking on Sagani TV’s current affairs program, “DIN NYE SHEM” Mr. A B A Fuseini however, said the last time the communication committee of parliament summoned the National Identification Authorities to update them on the current state of the Ghana Card registration, which is the sole pre-requisite document for the re-registration of the SIM cards, the NIA told the committee that, a lot of Ghanaians have registered the Ghana card but have not yet received their cards.

According to the Sagnarigu law maker, deactivating the unregistered SIM cards will cause chaos among Ghanaians, which will also affect the government as far as tax revenue is concern, looking at the quantum of taxes the telecommunications are paying to government.

The Sim re-registration exercise started in October 2021 which was expected to end on 31st March this year, but the ministry of communication and digitalization extended the date to 31st July 2022.

People who fail to comply with the directive will have their SIM cards deactivated.

The aim for the re-registration of the SIM cards is to help law enforcement agencies in the country to identify SIM card owners, track criminals who use phones for illegal activities, curb phone theft, hate, mobile fraud activities among others.
